About a third of the patients with type 1 diabetes suffer from the clinical syndrome of impaired awareness of hypoglycemia, meaning that they have lost the ability to timely and/or accurately perceive low blood glucose levels. These patients are at a high risk of developing severe and potentially hazardous hypoglycemia. In this thesis we investigated underlying mechanism of the development of impaired awareness of hypoglycemia, using MRI.
